SUV hits, kills Lee’s Summit woman standing on shoulder of I-435 after traffic crash

A 40-year-old Lee’s Summit woman died when she was struck by a SUV on Interstate 435 following a crash late Wednesday, according to Kansas City police.

The crash occurred about 10:20 p.m. just south of Eastwood Trafficway on northbound l-435, Sgt. Jacob Becchina, a spokesman for the department, said in an email.

According to the preliminary investigation, the woman was headed northbound on I-435 in a Honda sedan when she became involved in a minor injury collision with a truck.

The Honda came to a stop the left lane of traffic when it became disabled. The woman then got out of her vehicle and was standing on the left shoulder of the highway, Becchina said.

A Chevrolet SUV headed north on I-435 came across the crash and saw the Honda stopped in the lane of traffic. The driver attempted to steer onto the shoulder around the disabled car, but struck the car and the woman, Becchina said.

The driver of the SUV stopped at the crash and was released pending further investigation.

So far this year, Kansas City has had 55 traffic deaths.
