Deanna Rose Farmstead was set to open Wednesday. Then COVID-19 cases spiked
The goats, horses, cows and other animals at Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead won’t have visitors probably anytime soon.
The popular family attraction in Overland Park has set multiple reopening days since COVID-19 shutdowns delayed the original April 1 launch to the season. Its most recent plan was to open Wednesday.
But Deanna Rose is following Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly’s phased reopening recommendations. And last week, Kelly urged communities to remain at Phase 3 — which limits gatherings to 45 people — until at least July 6, two weeks later than originally planned. Local officials have the ultimate decision.
Now Deanna Rose says it will remain closed until the state’s “phase out,” when the size of gatherings won’t be limited and only social distancing is recommended. But given the steep rise in coronavirus cases both in Johnson County and the state, the “phase out” could be delayed again.
Deanna Rose routinely draws crowds with its more than 250 animals and birds, playgrounds and gardens.
The farmstead staff is working on a plan to reopen safely, following state and county public health recommendations, according to its website. Visit opkansas.org for updates.
