Two student athletes at this Kansas high school tested positive for coronavirus

Summer conditioning for sports at Shawnee Mission East High School was shut down Friday and Saturday after two student athletes tested positive for COVID-19, district officials said.

The specific sports those students participated in will remain shut down until contact tracing is complete, Shawnee Mission School District spokesman David Smith said in an email to The Star.

Smith said he would not say what sports were affected in order to protect the students’ privacy.

The shutdown, Smith said, was in accordance with guidance from the Johnson County Health Department.

He said the district is “hopeful that being proactive will prevent an outbreak from occurring” and that they would prioritize health and safety for students and staff.

Students and coaches at conditioning, Smith said, stay outdoors and adhere to “strict social distancing.” Students to do not wear masks while exercising.

In Johnson County, at least 1,488 people have been infected with the rapidly spreading virus. Eighty-three people have died according to county data.
