Want to speak out about Kansas City’s J.C. Nichols street and fountain? Here’s how

The public will have another chance — virtually this time — at speaking out on whether to rename J.C. Nichols fountain and parkway.

Kansas City’s board of parks and recreation commissioners in partnership with the Kansas City Public Library will host the session via Zoom at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

RSVP before the session and find the password at kclibrary.org. People will be allowed to speak for 90 seconds. The department recommends signing in early.

The session is focused on whether to remove Nichols’ name, although speakers can suggest new names.

The department held an in-person session June 18, where the majority of speakers supported removing Nichols’ name.

The public sessions come after parks commissioner Chris Goode proposed removing Nichols’ name from the fountain and parkway on the Country Club Plaza, the shopping area Nichols developed in the 1920s. Goode and others say Nichols promoted racism by restricting Black people and other minority groups from living in the neighborhoods he developed.

The board expects to discuss the name removal at its next meeting June 30.
