65-year-old found in search for drowning victim at Hillsdale Lake in Miami County

A second day of search and recovery efforts continued Wednesday morning for a person believed to have drowned in Hillsdale Lake in Miami County, Kansas, the Miami County sheriff said in a release.

The search began about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday after a witness saw a person fall out of a boat while attempting to tie off and did not resurface, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office later said emergency workers had located a 65-year-old man 27 feet below water and 2000 feet from the shore Wednesday. Details have not yet been released.

Dive teams from the Osawatomie Fire Department, Johnson County Fire District No. 2 and the Overland Park Police Department searched area. The Miami County EMS and Kansas Wildlife, Parks and Tourism assisted in the efforts.

The search turned into a recovery effort after the victim was not found, the sheriff’s office said. By 9:30 p.m., efforts were suspended and were expected to resume Wednesday morning. The Marysville Boat Ramp and the surrounding waters at the lake are closed while the search continues.

The name of the drowning victim has not been released.

The Miami County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the drowning.
