Country Club Plaza closed for 6th day following George Floyd protests in Kansas City

The Country Club Plaza remains closed Thursday, the sixth day in a row the popular Kansas City shopping center is shuttered amid days of protest against police brutality following the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

The Plaza initially closed at 4 p.m. Saturday ahead of a night of protests at the nearby Mill Creek Park. While Plaza businesses planned to reopen Monday, some demonstrations took a violent turn, leading to some property damage.

Several stores were vandalized Saturday night on the Country Club Plaza when a protest to bring awareness to the death of George Floyd who died in the custody of Minneapolis police turned violent. Kansas City police used tear gas in attempt to disperse the crowd of protesters.

As the protests continued during the week, the Plaza remained closed.

As of Wednesday evening, about 200 people have been arrested in the Kansas City protests. Police have deployed tear gas and pepper spray at some of the demonstrations, though Tuesday and Wednesday’s protest remained mostly peaceful and no tear gas was deployed.
