Crowd gathers Monday on Plaza for fourth day of George Floyd protests in Kansas City
Protests continued at the Country Club Plaza for a fourth day as a few dozen people began gathering Monday afternoon.
A few people by the J.C. Nichols Memorial Fountain held signs, saying “Black Lives Matter” and “Say their names.”
Large white panels were added to the park for people to write on, sharing their own messages.
One person wrote in part, “America, Please do the right thing.”
About 30 people joined together and were heard chanting “White silence is compliance,” as passing drivers honked.
The demonstration continued as many people around the nation have spoken out against police brutality and the deaths of black Americans at the hands of law enforcement.
Large crowds gathered on the Plaza Friday, Saturday and Sunday to protest after a Memorial Day incident where a black man, George Floyd, died after a white Minneapolis police officer kneeled on his neck for several minutes. The action was captured on a bystander’s video.
Protests Saturday and Sunday ended with police deploying tear gas, and on Sunday the city imposed an 8 p.m. curfew on the Plaza, Westport, downtown business districts and city parks.
More than 150 people were arrested during three days of protests. One person was arrested on a possession offense and four people were charged with stealing from businesses. The rest of the arrests were municipal charges associated with the protest.
As the protest went on Monday, about 30 protesters at the corner of Main Street and Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard held signs and chanted “white silence is compliance.”
