Country Club Plaza in KC will close Saturday through Monday morning ahead of protests
In anticipation of continued protests over the weekend, the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City will close from 4 p.m. Saturday until 11 a.m. Monday.
The shopping and dining center announced plans to close in a post on Twitter Saturday morning. The decision, the post said, was made “in response to protests scheduled in Kansas City, and out of an abundance of caution.”
Protests against police brutality and the death of George Floyd started at the Plaza on Friday afternoon and continued into the early morning hours Saturday.
The protests were mostly peaceful although some police cars were damaged, windows were broken and people with guns were spotted in the crowd, police said. At two points during the night, Kansas City Police Department officers used pepper spray on the protesters.
Additional protests are scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday.
Floyd, a black man in Minneapolis, died following his arrest by white police officers. Many have condemned the death as the result of excessive use of force. His death has sparked protests, some violent, in cities across the country.
