Kansas City pools, splash parks will not open this summer due to coronavirus

Kansas City is the latest city in the area to end its summer pool season before it started, the KCMO Parks and Recreation Department announced Friday.

All city pools and spray parks will remain closed for the 2020 season. The decision was made after consultation with the city health department.

“KC Parks feels this is the best decision for our community,” read a Twitter post by the parks department.

Kansas City joins multiple cities in the area that have chosen to keep pools closed over the summer amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Overland Park City Council voted Monday to keep pools closed following similar decisions in Independence, Prairie Village, Roeland Park, Mission and Fairway.

The Leawood City Council voted Monday to open the city’s aquatic center with restrictions.
