Man dead, woman injured in early morning house fire in Kansas City

A man died and a woman was hospitalized after a fire broke out in a Kansas City home early Tuesday.

Firefighters responded to the blaze shortly after 4 a.m. in the 8000 block of South Benton Avenue.

They pulled the two victims from the burning home. Police later identified the dead man as 75-year-old James D. Masters.

Steve Walker, president of the Marlborough East Neighborhood Association, woke up to a phone call at 5 a.m. about a fire down the street.

“The whole back of the house was just nothing but flames,” said Walker, 63, who was still standing on the street in his pajama pants at 8 a.m.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, said Assistant Chief Jimmy Walker, a spokesman for the Kansas City Fire Department.
