Church of the Resurrection suspends worship services, moves to online-only format
The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection said Friday it decided to cancel its worship services this weekend after news of the novel coronavirus continued to escalate on Thursday.
The Church of the Resurrection, the largest Methodist church in the country, has several locations around the metro. In a letter to parishioners, Pastor Adam Hamilton said worship services would be offered online only this weekend and “until the situation has changed. We will reevaluate on a week to week basis.”
Hamilton said he was interviewing public health and infectious disease experts for his sermon this Sunday before he and the leadership team received input from the Church Council and decided to suspend live worship services.
Worship services will still be available online.
Hamilton said the church has never closed before in its 29 years.
“This was weighed against the concern for the safety and health of our members and staff and our broader community, and the responsibility to do our part in helping to slow or minimize the spread of the virus,” Hamilton said.
The church’s other programs will also be moving to online.
Hamilton said the congregational care team will stay connected with patients and residents at hospitals and care facilities through phone calls and notes.
