Funeral held for Kansas City, Kansas, crossing guard killed while protecting children
Funeral services were held Monday for a crossing guard heralded as a hero for saving the lives of two children last week.
Bob Nill was hit by a car and killed the morning of Feb. 18 as he was trying to stop traffic for children going to Christ the King parish school in the 5400 block of Leavenworth Road.
The 88-year-old man was struck by a black sedan that was headed east on Leavenworth Road. The two children were getting ready to cross the street when Nill yelled at them to stop, which prevented them from being hit by the car.
Funeral service were held at Christ the King Catholic Church. The family asked memorial contributions be made to Christ the King School.
Nill grew up in Kansas City, Kansas, graduated from Wyandotte High School and served with the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean War. Nill, who played football at Baker University, co-founded Wyandotte County Sports Association and coached football and baseball. He had a career in banking and life insurance before working for the Wyandotte County Appraiser’s Office.
In his retirement, he became a crossing guard for the Unified Government of Wyandotte County. He had been on the job for five years before his death.
He is survived by three sons and several grandchildren and a great grandson.
