Man injured in Overland Park house fire caused by improperly discarded cigarette
One person was injured early Saturday morning in a house fire at 95th and Catalina streets in Overland Park, according to fire officials.
Overland Park and Leawood fire crews were called to the house just after 3:30 a.m. Saturday, according to a news release from the Overland Park Fire Department.
The fire, which crews later determined was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials, caused significant fire and smoke damage to the single-story home.
When crews arrived, Rhodes said, smoke was seen coming from the home. The fire was brought under control in 30 minutes and extinguished after another 45 minutes.
Two of the three adults in the home were uninjured. The third was transported to the hospital with hand and feet burns.
According to the Rhodes the injured man told investigators he had smoked a cigarette on a basement couch before falling asleep. When he woke up to a fire on the sofa, he said, he tried to fight the fire before alerting the two other adults in the house.
Investigators do not believe the home had working smoke alarms, the release said.
