Chiefs fans recognize that headband and hair. Mahomes makes local cake baker a hit
After marrying Ryan Eitland of Overland Park in 2015, Aubrey Eitland relocated from coastal California to Overland Park, where she has embraced Midwest living, Kansas City and the Chiefs.
Eitland, 35, a mother of three, wanted to spend more time with her children so after discussions with her husband, she took a leap of faith and quit her job to focus on her new venture. Water to Wheat Cakery opened in 2019. Cake baking had been her hobby and she wanted to make a go of it as a business.
She describes herself as a self-taught baker and designer who bakes cakes for weddings, birthdays, gender reveals and any other special occasion.
“Everybody is crazy about the Chiefs,” said Eitland, who wanted to design a cake that would embrace Chiefs’ fever, hotter than ever now that the team is heading to the Super Bowl.
“Coming from California, I wasn’t necessarily a (Chiefs) fan, but once you implant yourself in this city, it just takes you over,” Eitland said. “The excitement, the camaraderie, the community — and it makes the city come alive,” she said.
The inspiration for Eitland’s latest cake design comes from Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes — specifically, his hair and his headband.
“You’ve seen Mahomes and his hair, right? It’s legendary,” she said.
“I made the first Mahomes cake a couple of days ago and my phone blew up, my emails blew up and I’ve had an influx of orders,” said Eitland, who uses a Italian meringue butter cream frosting to create edible locks of hair draped atop Mahomes’ famous red headband wrapped around an Oreo cake.
Eitland is offering a challenge to the quarterback.
“He eats one of these cakes and if he does that, I will give him free cakes for as long as he’s our quarterback,” said Eitland, who added Mahomes is free to donate the cakes to a charity of his choice.
“The Chiefs make it feel like home; they bring everybody together,” said Eitland said, who has orders for 15 more Mahomes cakes.
