Person killed after being struck by car in south Johnson County; investigation ongoing

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office was investigating after a person was struck by a vehicle and killed Wednesday night.

The crash was reported around 8:40 p.m. on South Gardner Road at 207th Street.

According to Deputy Claire Canaan, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman, a semi-truck that was headed south on Gardner Road stopped and the driver exited the vehicle.

Canaan said a northbound car then struck the truck driver as he was walking on the road, and he died of the injuries at the scene.

The victim was identified Thursday as Richard M. Clawson, 54, of Centerville, Iowa.

The driver of the car remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators, Canaan said.

The Accident Investigation Unit of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office remained at the scene late Wednesday night as the investigation continued.
