Former meteorologist Mike Thompson elected to fill vacant Kansas state Senate seat

Former meteorologist Mike Thompson was elected to serve the remainder of Mary Pilcher-Cook’s term in the Kansas state Senate, the Johnson County Republican Party announced.

Pilcher-Cook announced in late December that she was resigning so she could retire after 15 years as one of Kansas Legislature’s most conservative members. She was first elected to the Senate in 2008 and previously served in the House.

With a vote of 46-0, Republican precinct committee members in Senate District 10 selected Thompson to fill the vacant seat.

Thompson had announced late last month he was seeking to fill the remainder of her term and then run in the primary for a full four-year-term in November 2020.

Two other candidates — Republican state Rep. Tom Cox and Shawnee City Councilwoman Lindsey Constance, a Democrat — have said they are running for the seat.
