Clay County landscaping firm took money but didn’t do work, Missouri lawsuit says

The Missouri Attorney General’s office has sued a Kansas City, North, lawn and landscaping company and its owner claiming they committed consumer fraud, according to a news release Wednesday.

Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt announced Wednesday that a consumer fraud lawsuit has been filed in Clay County against Four Seasons Lawn & Landscape LLC and its owner, John Cazzell.

A message seeking comment on the suit left on voicemail at Four Seasons Wednesday afternoon was not immediately returned.

The suit, which was filed in early December but hadn’t been served until Jan. 2, says Cazzell, through Four Seasons, required customers to pay at least a portion of the contract up front for lawn and landscape work but never did the promised work.

The attorney general’s office brought the suit after investigating complaints from several customers in Clay and Platte counties, according to the news release. The suit lists three examples where people complained and notes that the list is not intended to be an exhaustive list.

The suit is seeking an unspecified amount in restitution for Four Season customers who are found to have suffered losses as well as a payment to the state equal to 10 percent of the total restitution ordered against the defendants.

The state is also seeking other civil penalties and costs related to the investigation and prosecution of the case.
