Funeral services announced for West Peculiar firefighter killed during blaze

Funeral services have been scheduled for a firefighter who was killed during a house fire over the weekend in Cass County.

Charles “Chuck” McCormick, who served as a firefighter and paramedic for the West Peculiar Fire Protection District, died from his injuries Sunday after he fell through the floor of the burning home in the 23300 block of Deer Run Road in Peculiar.

In a statement Tuesday, the West Peculiar Fire Protection District announced details on funeral services scheduled for McCormick. The visitation is scheduled from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Abundant Life Church, 304 S.W. Persels Road in Lee’s Summit followed by the funeral 11 a.m. Saturday at the same location. The public is invited to attend.

According to the statement, McCormick served in the National Guard with the 1135th Engineer Company from 2011 to 2014. He joined the Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services in Georgia, where he remained from the fall of 2014 to 2017. McCormick moved to Missouri, and from January 2018 to November 2019, he worked with the South Metropolitan Fire Protection District in Raymore. McCormick joined the West Peculiar Fire Protection District full-time just about a month ago.

McCormick, 30, lived in Raymore, and was a husband and the father of three sons ages 5, 6 and 9.

A GoFundMe page created to help McCormick’s family has raised more than $40,000 since Monday.
