Rounds of heavy rains, flooding likely across Kansas City area this weekend

You can’t blame Kansas City residents if they believe that if it’s the weekend, it must mean rain.

After all, not since about mid-March have the skies have been dry on a Kansas City Saturday and Sunday. This weekend will not be any different than the last nearly dozen or so before.

Multiple rounds of thunderstorms are likely to sweep across the Kansas City area through early next week, bringing widespread heavy rainfall. The Kansas City area can expect widespread amounts in excess of 2.5 inches through Tuesday. Some areas could see more than 5 inches of rain.

The threat of severe thunderstorms is low, but flash flooding as well as ongoing river flooding is expected because recent rains have saturated the ground.

The stormy weekend will get its start with rain possible late Friday morning over eastern Kansas and western Missouri as a large thunderstorm complex over southwest Kansas moves into the area.

Scattered showers and storms could be possible Friday afternoon and evening near and north of Interstate 70. None of this rain, however, was expected to be heavy or widespread.

More widespread rain and thunderstorms could develop overnight into Saturday, producing a corridor of heavy rain, particularly across areas near or just south of the Kansas City metropolitan area.

Several additional rounds of rain and storms are expected to move through the area Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Heavy rains are likely with these storms, particularly on Saturday night.
