Stormy weather is likely to rule the weekend again in Kansas City

Kansas City just can’t catch a break with weekend weather, and this weekend doesn’t appear to be any different.

It’s been weeks since Kansas City has experienced a dry weekend. In fact, the last dry one was on March 20 and 21. Since then, 7.25 inches of rain has fallen on Saturdays and Sundays alone, according to the National Weather Service.

This weekend appears to be another one filled with multiple rounds of thunderstorms, beginning Thursday morning.

The non-severe thunderstorms that were moving east through the Kansas City area Thursday morning were expected to end by midday, according to the National Weather Service.

More thunderstorms, however, are expected to form Thursday afternoon, bringing the chance for strong to severe weather from western Kansas through northern Missouri.

The storms were expected to form along a line stretching from south of the Kansas City metropolitan area through Kirksville, Mo., including locations northward, according to the National Weather Service. The strong to severe storms were more likely to form across northwestern Missouri, which was under an enhanced risk of severe storms.

The main hazards from the storms were the potential for moderate to heavy rainfall, which could lead to localized flooding, gusting to damaging winds, hail, and dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning. There was a slight risk of tornadoes.

Although there a chance for rain in Kansas City on Friday, drier air was expected to work its way into the area, leaving much of the area north of Interstate 70 rain-free during the day.

More active weather is expected to return Friday night, bringing the likelihood of multiple rounds of thunderstorms with moderate to heavy rainfall possible over the weekend.
