Heat index could break 100 degrees Wednesday

The National Weather Service is forecasting the heat index could break the 100-degree mark Wednesday as a hot and humid air mass remains in place across the Kansas City area.

Temperatures in the 90s on Tuesday prompted warnings from several agencies and welfare organizations not to leave children or pets inside hot vehicles.

Actual temperatures Wednesday are expected to be in the mid-90s with a heat index of 101 possible at Kansas City International Airport, according to the weather service.

Temperatures are forecast to drop back into the 80s for the rest of the week, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms beginning Thursday and continuing through the weekend and into next week. The greatest chance for rain is Friday night.
