Severe weather, flooding rains possible in Kansas, Missouri

Water-weary Kansas Citians — and their neighbors to the north, west and east — may face another round of storms and rain Sunday.

The National Weather Service in Topeka said Sunday morning that another round of storms is expected in the afternoon. The storms will become widespread in the evening and overnight, the service said.

“Some of these storms will produce heavy rain which could quickly lead to flash flooding,” the weather service statement said. “Severe storms are possible as well, mainly during the afternoon and evening.”

Rainfall up to 3 inches is possible in some areas. The greatest chance for severe storms is between 3 p.m. and 11 p.m.

A flash flood watch remains in effect for northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri, including the Kansas City area.

Several creeks and rivers have overflowed in recent days, prompting road closures and evacuations.

Monday marks the 49th anniversary of a 1966 F5 tornado that devastated Topeka, killing 17 people and causing hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.
