Missouri Press Association honors The Kansas City Star
For the 20th time in 21 years, The Kansas City Star was a top finisher in the Missouri Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest.
The Star was named the Gold Medal newspaper for large daily newspapers.
The awards were presented Saturday at the Missouri Press Association’s convention in Columbia.
The Star won first-place awards in 25 categories, including general excellence, overall design, front page, editorial pages, coverage of rural life or agriculture, coverage of community/people/lifestyles, newspaper in education project and headline writing.
Other first-place awards: Christine Vendel for news story, Barbara Shelly for serious columnist, Keith Myers for feature photo, Rich Sugg for sports photo, Laura Bauer and Judy L. Thomas for community service, Rustin Dodd for sports feature story, Vahe Gregorian for sports columnist, Alan Bavley for business story, Dave Helling and Steve Kraske for government coverage, Donald Bradley for story about rural life or agriculture, Lee Hill Kavanaugh for religion story, Mará Rose Williams and Eric Adler for education story, Brent Frazee for outdoors story, Mike McGraw for history story, Dave Eames for information graphic, Lee Judge for editorial cartoon, and these contributors for special section: Jill Silva, Cindy Hoedel, Tammy Ljungblad, Mary G. Pepitone, Barbara Hill-Meyer and Hector Casanova.
Second-place awards: Staff for breaking news story, Mike Hendricks for news story, Eric Adler for feature story and for news or feature obituary, Dugan Arnett for news or feature series, staff for best editorial, Jill Toyoshiba for photo illustration, Tammy Ljungblad for photo package, staff for sports pages, Sam Mellinger for sports columnist, Rick Montgomery for story about rural life or agriculture, Donald Bradley for religion story, Joe Robertson for education story, Bradley for history story and Neil Nakahodo for page design.
