One person is dead and two others injured after a driver traveling the wrong way on U.S. 69 in Johnson and Miami counties crashed with another vehicle early Sunday, according to the Miami County Sheriff’s Office.

At least one of the two injured has life-threatening injuries.

The crash happened shortly before 4 a.m. on northbound U.S. 69, just north of 223rd Street, according to Capt. Matthew Kelly of the Miami County Sheriff’s Office.

A vehicle was headed south in the northbound lanes of U.S. 69 when it collided with a vehicle heading north, killing one of the people in the vehicles. Two other people were taken to hospitals.

The highway was closed in both directions between 199th and 223rd streets for several hours. The highway is expected to remain closed for at least another hour, Kelly said about 8:30 a.m.

Deputies from the Miami and Johnson county sheriff’s offices were investigating the crash.
