Fire reported at City Center Square in downtown KC. ATF investigating
A fire damaged a post office Saturday afternoon in downtown Kansas City.
The fire was reported just before 2:30 p.m. at the post office on the second floor of City Center Square, located at 1100 Main St.
According to a spokeswoman for the United States Postal Service in Kansas City, no employees were injured. The postal service said it would temporarily suspend services at that location as a result of the fire. Customers are expected to be notified Monday of details concerning their post office box.
Other tenants of the large office building include the Kansas City Business Journal and Domino’s.
The Kansas City Streetcar suspended its service for at least an hour as firefighters worked to put out the fire.
By 3:45 p.m., firefighters were clearing the scene.
Kansas City fire investigators have asked the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to help determine what caused the fire and where it originated.
An ATF spokesman said the fire was in a space between the first and second floors of the building.
The ATF’s Kansas City Field Division later tweeted the fire appeared to be an accident.
“Investigators have finished their examination of the fire scene at 1100 Main, KCMO,” the tweet said Saturday night. “Determining an exact cause will prove difficult due to the amount of damage and confined space in which the fire originated but appears accidental.”
The investigation was ongoing.
