A 16-year-old girl was hit by a vehicle while she was out trick-or-treating Wednesday night in the Northland, Kansas City police said.

The collision happened on North Brighton Avenue at N.E. 42nd Street around 5:54 p.m.

A preliminary investigation showed a Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling north on Brighton Avenue when a group of trick-or-treaters, ages 15, 16 and 20, ran across the street.

Police said for unknown reasons, the 16-year-old stopped in the middle of the road, hesitated and then continued crossing the street to the east. The Jeep driver told police she tried to stop when the teen walked out in front of the vehicle but struck the teen, knocking her down on the roadway.

The teen was taken to a hospital with moderate, non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The driver was not hurt.
