Search ends for man who drove into Kansas River in Kansas City, Kan.

Authorities in Kansas City, Kan., have ended a search for a man who drove into the Kansas River at Kaw Point Park.

The man drove a vehicle into the river around 6:50 p.m. Friday at the Kaw Point Park boat ramp in Kansas City, Kan., which is close to the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers, according to the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office.

A witness reported seeing a man treading water. He popped up, went down and wasn’t seen again, the sheriff’s office said.

Rescue crews searched the river both Friday night and Saturday. The search, however, was ended after they were unable to find the man.

Capt. David Thaxton, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said search crews didn’t expect to be able to find the man because of the current of the Missouri River.
