A fatal crash involving a Kansas City police vehicle shut down northbound Interstate 435 near Arrowhead Stadium, backing up traffic for miles a couple hours before Sunday night’s Chiefs game.

Just before 5 p.m., northbound I-435 has backed up beyond 63rd Street, more than three miles. All traffic was being forced to exit at Eastwood Trafficway.

The KC Scout traffic system reported the crash at 4:08 p.m. on I-435 just before Stadium Drive. One person has been reported dead, according to Kansas City police. Two other people were in critical condition.

Kansas City police spokesman, Capt. Lionel Colón, said an off-duty officer driving a department van rear-ended another vehicle at the start of the crash. Three or four vehicles were involved, he said. The officer was being treated in a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

No other details of the crash were available as the investigation was continuing Sunday night.

One lane of traffic was reopened around 6 p.m. and the road was expected to be cleared by 7:30 p.m.

The Chiefs are played the Cincinnati Bengals with the kickoff at 7:20 p.m.
