Fire at Overland Park apartment building displaces eight, including three children

A fire at an Overland Park apartment building Sunday morning displaced eight people, including three children, according to fire officials.

Emergency crews responded to the fire about 8 a.m. in the 9400 block of Nieman Road, where firefighters encountered heavy smoke coming out of a two-story quadplex, according to the Overland Park Fire Department.

Residents in the apartment where the fire started reported waking up to the smell of smoke, but did not hear smoke alarms, fire officials said. Crews working in other units did hear smoke alarms.

Firefighters extinguished flames in the basement and first and second floors. All four units in the building were damaged.

No injuries were reported. Five adults and three children were displaced.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Overland Park fire officials said the incident could serve as a reminder for residents to make sure their smoke alarms are in working order.

The Lenexa Fire Department also responded to the fire.
