Torrential rains in Kansas City have forced the cancellation of numerous events, including the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Saturday afternoon and WaterFire Saturday night.

Race organizers have posted information on social media that the race scheduled for Saturday afternoon has been canceled “due to weather and out of concern for the safety and security of our Race participants, vendors, sponsors and volunteers.”

WaterFire officials also said their event on Brush Creek was canceled for this year.

“This is always a heartbreaking decision to make,” Cheryl Kimmi, executive producer of KC Creates said in a statement on social media. “With the anticipated accumulation of rain over the next 24 hours, the safety of the performers, boat operators and public had to be our number one priority.”

She said WaterFire will return in 2019 and thanked everyone who has worked so hard this year.

“It takes a monumental amount of time and effort from many different groups of people to make this event possible each year, and we cannot iterate our appreciation enough.”
