Girl found wandering alone in park; deputies interview mother

Authorities on Sunday were interviewing the mother of a 4-year-old girl found wandering at Wyandotte County Lake Park on Saturday night.

Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office deputies first located the girl at the park’s playground area.

“They searched the area looking for her parents or family members and no one seemed to know who the girl was,” said Lt. Kelli Bailiff, sheriff’s office spokeswoman.

Deputies took the girl from the park, located near Leavenworth Road and North 91st Street, to an area hospital. After doctors determined her to be in good health, the girl was placed in protective custody.

After no guardian or family member had come Sunday, the sheriff’s office contacted area media outlets. The girl’s mother soon contacted the sheriff’s office, said Bailiff.

“She is currently being interviewed by sheriff’s office detectives and is being cooperative,” Bailiff said. “It is an ongoing investigation and the child is still in protective custody.”
