Burning hay fell from semi truck on I-35 and burnt vehicles under the bridge
A “massive vehicle fire” shut down northbound Interstate 35 near Pennway Street on Tuesday afternoon, according to Kansas City Scout.
The conflagration caused major traffic congestion in the area, according to images from Scout cameras. A semitractor-trailer caught fire as well as additional vehicles beneath a bridge of the highway.
The big rig was transporting hay. A witness said burning hay fell from its position on a bridge of I-35 to cars parked below.
Officer Jacob Becchina with Kansas City police said no injuries were reported.
He said the cause of the fire remains unknown.
“The cargo appeared to be bales of hay, so it ignited quickly and significantly,” he said.
Chrissy Miller said she was in a nearby tattoo parlor when she saw thick, black smoke.
“I knew my car was on fire,” she said. She ran down the street and cried as she watched her Dodge Avenger burn.
“It’s awful. I love that car. … I’m not going to park under a bridge ever again,” Miller said.
Ashley Emerson’s vehicle was also totaled by fire.
“It’s absolutely a freak thing,” he said, but he added he’s grateful no one was hurt.
“My heart goes out to the truck driver up there,” he said.
