Shawnee mansion destroyed by fire
A secluded mansion near Lake Quivira in Shawnee was destroyed by fire Wednesday afternoon.
The home at 5450 Lackman Road, listed on a real estate site for $1.5 million, was still burning hours after crews arrived and firefighters expect to be on the scene all night.
The fire was reported about 4:30 p.m. by someone who smelled what he thought was an illegal burn. Fire crews later learned that someone in a distant subdivision saw smoke about 3 p.m.
“It had a pretty good head start before we got the call,” Shawnee Fire Chief John Mattox said. “It’s going to be a total loss.”
Investigators will not be able to start looking for a cause until Thursday morning, Mattox said.
The owner of the 9,000-square-foot house that sits on 15 acres was out of town.
