Two children died in a crash that shut down the westbound lanes of Interstate 435 before State Line Road Sunday evening.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that the two children who died were in a van with other adults and children that crashed with a semi tractor-trailer shortly before 5 p.m.
The van may have slowed down or stalled and then was struck by the truck, witnesses said. The truck veered off the highway and crashed into a concrete wall separating the highway from the backyards of residences on the north side of I-435.
“We heard a tremendous BOOM that rattled our windows,” one resident witness posted on Facebook. “The cab of a semi tractor, wheels, tires and even an axle were catapulted into our neighbor’s yard.”
Two other children and an adult in the van were injured and the driver of the truck. They were being treated in hospitals Sunday night.
The highway patrol was continuing its investigation on the scene and the westbound lanes were expected to be closed at least until around 10 p.m., the highway patrol said.
