Barricaded Northland man surrenders to KC police, ending standoff
A Kansas City, North man who allegedly threatened the lives of his wife and teenage son Thursday morning surrendered to police after a standoff that lasted more than four hours.
The incident began about 4 a.m. when officers were called to the residence in the 3700 block of North College Avenue in response to a man threatening to shoot himself. Officers ordered the man to surrender but he refused and barricaded himself inside.
Police soon learned that man’s wife and a teenage son were with him. The son managed to leave but the man refused to allow his wife to leave. About 8 a.m., the man threatened suicide. He told officers that he was going to shoot it out with police. After the man stepped outside, an officer fired a bean bag that struck him in the leg.
The man continued to point his weapon at the officers. An officer fired a shot and the man returned the gunfire. No one was hit.
The man went back inside. He surrendered just before 9 a.m. and was taken to a hospital as a precaution, police said.
