KC police seek dark SUV after pedestrian is killed in hit-and-run on U.S. 71

A woman was killed late Friday night in a hit-and-run crash along U.S. 71 as she was trying to cross the road in a crosswalk.

The crash occurred around 11:15 p.m. Friday, according to Kansas City police. The woman was walking west to east in the crosswalk at Gregory when the vehicle hit her.

Police on Sunday identified the woman as Jyra D. Hill, 25.

The vehicle, which evidence at the scene indicates was a 2012-2015 Chevrolet Equinox, was in the left lane at the time of the crash and continued traveling south, not stopping, a police news release said. Witnesses told officers at the scene the vehicle was either a black or dark blue SUV. It is believed to have front-end damage caused from the crash.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

All southbound lanes of U.S. 71 were closed for more than three hours.
