Having trouble figuring out income tax changes? The KC Library has help

Filling out income tax forms is complicated and maddening enough.

But it could be even more so this year after the tax reform bill introduced who knows what kinds of sand traps, as well as opportunities.

The Kansas City Public Library, in collaboration with AARP and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, is offering free tax preparation and assistance for library patrons beginning Monday, Jan. 29, and continuing through the filing deadline. The service is available for people earning less than $60,000, filing singly or jointly. You do not have to have a library card. The AARP assistance is for people 50 and older.

Tax assistance will be offered on a first come, first served basis according to the following schedule:

▪ Central Library, 14 W. 10th St., Mondays and Saturdays beginning at 10 a.m.

▪ North-East Branch, 6000 Wilson Road, Tuesdays beginning at 2 p.m. and Wednesdays beginning at 10 a.m.

▪ Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St., Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays beginning at 10 a.m., and Tuesdays beginning at noon.

▪ Trails West Branch, 11401 E. 23rd St., Independence, Thursdays beginning at 10 a.m.

▪ Waldo Branch, 201 E. 75th St., Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., by appointment only. Appointments are available on a walk-in basis through AARP volunteers.

Patrons should bring a photo ID and Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number for themselves and their spouse and dependents, wage and earning statements, and other pertinent documents.

In addition, IRS volunteers will teach patrons how to file their taxes electronically using The United Way’s myfreetaxes.com This service is available to library patrons making less than $66,000 according to the following schedule:

▪ Ruiz Branch, 2017 W. Pennway, Feb. 3, 1-2:30 p.m.

▪ Waldo Branch, 201 E. 75th St., Feb. 8, 6-7:30 p.m.

▪ North-East Branch, 6000 Wilson Road, Feb. 10, 10-11:30 a.m.

▪ Trails West, 11401 E. 23rd St., Independence, Feb. 15, 6-7:30 p.m.

▪ Southeast Branch, 6242 Swope Parkway, Feb. 21, 4-5:30 p.m.

▪ Central Library, 14 W. 10th St., Feb. 28, 4-5:30 p.m.
