Below-zero wind chill in Kansas City prompts school cancellations for Tuesday
Dangerously cold weather has prompted school cancellations in the Kansas City metropolitan area for the second time in a week.
After issuing a winter advisory that included light snowfall this weekend, the National Weather Service warned that bitter cold temperatures would return to Kansas City by Monday night.
The service issued a wind chill advisory from 6 p.m. Monday until noon Tuesday.
Wind chill values were expected to drop to -15 to -30 degrees by Tuesday morning.
On Thursday last week, freezing rain, sleet and snow prompted school cancellations throughout the Kansas City-area as forecasters warned of slick roads and dangerous commutes.
More than a dozen Missouri school districts announced school cancellations for Tuesday.
Several Johnson County schools, including Shawnee Mission, Olathe and Blue Valley, had previously scheduled a professional development day for teachers on Tuesday.
School districts that announced closings included Kansas City Public Schools, North Kansas City Schools, Lee’s Summit Schools and Park Hill Schools, among many others.
