Rounds of storms, some severe, targeting Kansas City
Stormy weather is expected Friday in the Kansas City area, with the possibility of large hail and isolated tornadoes.
The first wave of thunderstorms isn’t expected until after midnight, according to the National Weather Service.
Thunderstorms are possible after 4 a.m. Friday across eastern Kansas and Western Missouri.
The first round of storms, which are not expected to be severe, will likely last through Friday morning.
The morning storms are expected to bring around a quarter inch of rain. Highs are expected to reach the mid-60s on Friday.
A second round of much stronger thunderstorms is expected late Friday afternoon through Friday night. The storms will form over central Kansas and move northeast along a warm front through west-central Missouri Friday evening.
The immediate Kansas City area is under a slight risk for severe storms, but areas to the south and west are under an enhanced risk.
Large hail will be the primary threat, but there is a threat of isolated tornadoes mainly in the enhanced outlook area. That area includes the areas along and southwest of a line from Kansas City to Sedalia, according to the National Weather Service.
There is also a threat of heavy rainfall in some areas and minor flooding.
Between a half inch to one inch of rainfall is likely, while some areas hit by the stronger storms could see up to two inches of rainfall, according to the National Weather Service.
The storms are expected to move to the east by Saturday morning, although there is a chance of some ligh wrap-around showers, mainly east of U.S. 65.
Temperatures could reach the mid-60s to near 70 degrees Saturday.
Cooler air is expected to move into the area Saturday night into Sunday, with highs reaching the low 60s.
Seasonable temperatures and a few chances of rain showers are likely next week. Any rain, however, is likely to be light and short-lived, according to the National Weather Service.
