Kansas City realty group gives $30,000 to tiny homes for veterans

A Kansas City realty group has raised more than $30,000 for the tiny homes initiative of the Veterans Community Project.

Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Kansas City Homes presented a check Wednesday.

Each of the eight local Better Homes and Gardens offices held fundraisers, including a raffle, a duck race and a chili cookoff.

“I am extremely proud of our agents for going above and beyond to reach this monetary goal,” David Cooper, president of the realty group, said in a release.

The Veterans Community Project’s goal is to build a community of 50 tiny homes at 89th Street and Troost Avenue. The current aim is for veterans to begin moving into the 240-square-foot homes early next year.

The vets will have access to a community center at which they may have access to counseling, computer courses, a food pantry, and other services and programs.

Brandonn Mixon, director of facilities for the Veterans Community Project, thanked the sales agents of the realty group.

“Together, we will help eradicate veteran homelessness by taking the oath of serving those who served us,” Mixon said.

The Veterans Community Project was started in 2015 by combat veterans who bought four acres from the city’s Land Bank. The project has received several hundred of thousands dollars in monetary and in-kind donations.
