This KC woman was in labor, but she finished her finals before delivering her baby

Nothing was going to stop Kansas City college student Nayzia Thomas from finishing two finals last week. Not even labor pains.

There she was, in labor, sitting in a hospital bed at Shawnee Mission Medical Center with her laptop and finishing a research paper on dissociative identity disorder for her psych final.

She also worked on her humanities final while in labor, she told Self.

A little more than 12 hours later, on Dec. 12, she delivered a baby boy with gray eyes. His name is Anthony.

Complications from the delivery came — she lost a lot of blood — but so, too, did worldwide fame because her mother took a photo of her studying in the hospital bed and the picture went viral. So far it’s been featured in Ebony, USA Today, blogs and entertainment websites, and in international outlets, too.

“My mom took this pic & it’s the perfect explanation of my life. yes i’m about to have a baby, but final SZN ain’t over yet,” Thomas wrote in a tweet that has been retweeted more than 28,000 times and gobbled up nearly 134,000 likes.

The hospital is in awe of its patient’s tenacity, too.

Thomas is a sophomore at Johnson County Community College, where she is studying psychology, according to Yahoo Lifestyle.

Even though the psych paper wasn’t due until later in the week, she wanted to finish it before everything got “crazy,” she told Yahoo. She managed to finish all her finals before she was discharged, according to Self.

She said her mom took the picture because the image of her daughter studying while preparing to bring new life into the world spoke volumes about her daughter. Thomas told Yahoo she was working three jobs and taking classes when she found out she was pregnant.

“School is so important to me,” she said. “I didn’t want (the pregnancy) to be in the way. That’s what people expect. You’re a teen mom, you’re a young mother. That’s why my mom took that picture. It shows (I) follow through.”

She said her boyfriend and her mom are taking college classes, too. She plans to go back after winter break. Yahoo reported she got a 3.5 GPA for the semester.

Media from around the country have besieged the new mommy, prompting her to declare on her Facebook page: “I’m ready to have my life back. all this fame is overrated.”

Then again, as long as fame has found them ...

Thomas tweeted on Wednesday that she and her boyfriend plan to drop a “How We Went Viral” video on their new YouTube channel on Christmas Eve.
