Watch this adorable Kansas City kindergartner interview high school seniors

When Center School District staff decided to record students reading thank you letters in the style of late-night TV host Jimmy Fallon last year, one particularly adorable student stood out.

Preschool student Elijah Watson.

So this year, when school staff decided to produce a “Kids News Reporter” video in which a young student would interview high school seniors about college plans, they thought the Boone Elementary School kindergartner might be the right kid for the job.

“He's a ham. He's talkative. He's sweet. He's interactive,” Center School District spokesperson Kelly Wachel said Wednesday. “Elijah was just a natural fit.”

Feeling comfortable in front of the camera runs in the family. His father, Michael Watson, is a high school and college basketball commentator for Spectrum Sports and the Niles Media Group.

And while school officials encouraged Elijah to ask high school seniors about the ACT and their intended career paths, he was given plenty of room to improvise.

“I can get scholarships to each one of them for my ACT score, that’s a big test we have to take up here in high school,” senior Abbie Nastasi told Elijah. “It’s scary, too.”

“Scary?” Elijah said. “Well, I’m only scared of bats...”

He thought for second.

“And haunted houses.”

He didn’t hesitate to use his air time to roast his father.

“My Dad’s older than you. He’s an old man,” he joked to Devonei Kindred, grinning at his father off-camera.

But the funny video also proved a learning opportunity for the young student.

Elijah learned what an internship is, and took in some information about majors he had never heard about before.

“Personal finance?” he asked Chloe Volkland. “What does that mean?”

He looked a little confused when Zac Scearcy said he was considering being a nurse.

“A nurse is a girl,” Elijah said.

“This is getting kind of controversial here,” Scearcy said, laughing. “Did you know nurses can be boys too and doctors can be girls too?”

Elijah told his new high school senior friends that he was considering flying airplanes, becoming a kindergarten teacher or playing sports when he grew up.

But he also determined that being a news reporter wasn’t so bad.

“News reporter, every day,” he said. “It’s kind of fun.”
