Man shoots his leg, crashes on the way to the hospital and dies, Wichita police say

A man died Monday morning in Wichita after apparently shooting himself in the leg and then crashing while trying to get to a hospital, police said.

Authorities learned of the shooting after responding to a collision at about 8:40 a.m. involving three vehicles in the 1900 block of North Tallyrand, Lt. James Espinoza said.

The 27-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the upper left thigh, Espinoza said. He lost control of his vehicle while trying to get to a hospital and crashed.

Police aren’t sure whether the man shot himself in his car or if it happened elsewhere, Espinoza said. At this point, it’s not clear whether the man died as a result of the gunshot wound or injuries suffered in the collision.

An autopsy will determine the cause of death, Espinoza said.

Information on any other injuries linked to the collision is not yet available.
