Married couple killed in wrong-way crash on I-49 in KC early Saturday
A Kansas City woman and her husband were killed in a head-on collision on Interstate 49 in Kansas City early Saturday.
Kansas City police identified the victims as Laura E. Humphrey, 29, and her 31-year-old husband, Ryan C. Humphrey. The couple had married in April, according to court records.
The couple’s Jeep collided with a Chevrolet sedan that was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-49 shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday at Interstate 435, police said.
The driver of the Chevrolet was taken to a hospital and was listed in critical condition.
According to social media posts, Laura Humphrey worked at Children’s Mercy Hospital as a web content coordinator. Ryan Humphrey was a graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute.
The couple was just married in April, according to Jackson County records.
People who knew them said they were stunned by the news.
“They were two wonderful human beings, whose love for life was only exceeded by their love for each other,” said Kyle Sutton. “They were caring, vivacious, and fun-loving, bringing joy to everyone that they encountered.”
