Man’s death after struggle with Olathe police is under investigation
Update: Olathe police on Monday identified the man as Marcelo R. Carvalho of Olathe.
A 34-year-old man died after experiencing a medical emergency during a struggle with Olathe police who had responded to a report of an armed disturbance Saturday.
Officers went to the 14500 block of West 138th Place about 4 a.m. and encountered the man, who police said was agitated and threatened the officers with a blunt object.
As officers tried to take the man into custody, the man suffered a medical crisis, according to police. Officers attempted lifesaving techniques until medical personnel arrived, but the man later died at a hospital.
The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, as is common procedure in such cases, during the investigation.
The death is being investigated by the Johnson County Multi-Jurisdictional Officer Involved Shooting Investigation Team, a group of investigators from multiple agencies.
Olathe police had not released the man’s name as of Sunday afternoon.
