A 56-year-old man died after driving into high water during flooding in Miami County early Tuesday, according to the Miami County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office identified the man as Robert D. Schoenhals, of Pleasanton.

Schoenhals had been driving a car northbound on U.S. 69 near 363rd Street shortly before 5 a.m. when the car hydroplaned off the highway into a ditch filled with rushing water.

The water carried the car away. A sheriff’s deputy witnessed the wreck.

Widespread flooding throughout the greater Kansas City area made many roads impassable Monday night and early Tuesday.

Rescue crews from several surrounding agencies searched for the car, finding it about 45 minutes later, about 150 yards south from where it left the road. The car was empty.

Shortly after 7 a.m., crews found Schoenhals’ body 75 yards away. He had been the only occupant of the car, the sheriff’s office said.
