Shooting near Westport leaves man wounded early Sunday

Police officers patrolling on foot soon after the 3 a.m. closing of the Westport entertainment district rushed to a shooting just north of the district Sunday morning.

Police provided emergency medical services to a man who had been shot at 39th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. The man was taken to a nearby hospital with an injury that police said was not life-threatening.

No suspect information was available Sunday morning.

Security at Westport has been tightened in response to recent concerns about violence.

City leaders and Westport businesses have been debating a proposal to privatize streets at the heart of the district to allow for tighter security, including screening for guns.
