Explosion at Grandview plant injures three people

A team of investigators spent Wednesday morning combing the portion of a Grandview plant damaged by an explosion that injured three workers.

The explosion occurred about 4:30 a.m. at the Corbion Caravan manufacturing plant at 13800 Botts Road. A fireball shot up through a seven-story portion of the facility. The explosion demolished part of an exterior wall.

The fire activated a sprinkler system that extinguished some of the flames, said Fire Chief Ronald Graham.

Five or six employees were at the explosion point when it occurred. Two workers were treated for minor injuries, and a third was taken to a hospital with rib injuries.

Fifteen employees were inside the building when the explosion happened. The facility produces dry blend ingredients and emulsifiers that are sold to bakery and food manufacturers, according to a company release.

It took fire crews about 20 minutes to bring the blaze under control. No damage estimates were available, Graham said.
