Mother and three children lose home and dog in Overland Park fire
A mother and her three children were without a home Sunday after an afternoon fire destroyed the family’s two-story Overland Park house.
Nobody was home at the time of the fire, and firefighters from the Overland Park and Lenexa fire departments were able to save two of the family’s dogs, though a third was killed as a result of the fire.
“Investigators will start to get to work on it to nail down the cause, but we’re always pleased when no one’s hurt,” said Jason Rhodes, a spokesman for the Overland Park Fire Department.
Crews were alerted to the fire in the 10900 block of West 109th Street just before 3 p.m. Sunday, and they found fire and smoke emanating from the single-family home. The fire, which took firefighters an hour to get under control, destroyed the home’s attic and much of the second floor, according to Rhodes.
On Sunday, the Red Cross arrived to offer assistance to the family.
