A fire that spread to all three levels of a Mission Hills home caused significant damage Friday.

There were no injuries, but it took firefighters most of the afternoon to contain the blaze at 2303 W. 59th St.

Tony Lopez, chief of Consolidated Fire District No. 2, said the home was more than 100 years old and did not have any firestops built into it. That allowed flames to spread from the attic. Firefighters had to retreat and battle the blaze defensively when the floors became weak.

The fire was first detected shortly after 1 p.m. by workers doing a remodeling job. Engineers will return Saturday to try to determine a cause, Lopez said.

Fire crews from Overland Park, Shawnee and Leawood also responded.
